Aleman 2S hand press lever espresso machineUnheated, heated with PID, or paired with the Z2 steamer.
The Aleman 2S is a hand press lever espresso machine. You pull a 35 cm (13.8 in) lever to push water through the coffee, and your hand sets the pressure, from a soft pre-soak to a full 9 bar extraction and a slow taper at the end. The body is 304 stainless steel with solid wood, and the second-generation group takes a 58mm portafilter. This listing covers sixteen versions of the Aleman line, from the plain unheated 2P to the Ghost with PID temperature control, for home baristas who want lever espresso without a pump.
- Pressure set by hand
- PID on heated versions
- 58mm or 51mm group
- Z2 steamer bundles
Unheated, heated or with the Z2
Every version name has two parts: the machine, then how it gets hot. Decide the second part first, because it changes your whole routine.
Unheated
No cord. You preheat the group with a flush of hot water from the kettle, then brew. The simplest setup, easy to move and to take along, and the most hands-on.
Heated
Plugs in. A PID controller holds the temperature you set, adjustable from 50 to 110°C (122 to 230°F), so the second shot tastes like the first without a fresh preheat.
+ Z2 Steamer
An unheated machine bundled with Aleman's Z2 steam station, a stovetop milk steamer with a 700 ml (24 oz) tank that runs on your own burner at 1.5 to 2.5 bar. The version for lattes and flat whites.
The six machines in the lineup
- Aleman 2, second generation. The core model: 58mm group, 100 ml chamber, stainless steel and wood. Sold as Aleman 2 Unheated, Aleman 2 Heated and Aleman 2 Unheated + Z2 Steamer.
- New Aleman 2. The updated second generation. Choose New Aleman 2 Unheated, New Aleman 2 Unheated + Z2 Steamer, or the New 2S Wood Base Heated, the electric version on a solid wood base.
- 2P. A stainless steel base with a drip tray, steadier under a hard press and kinder to the counter. Sold as 2P Unheated, 2P Heated and 2P Unheated + Z2 Steamer.
- Sniper. A single-column stainless steel tower that leaves the portafilter in full view, good for watching a bottomless shot. Five choices: Sniper Unheated, Sniper Heated, Sniper Unheated + Z2 Steamer, Sniper Unheated + Carry Case and Sniper Heated + Carry Case.
- Ghost. Ghost Temperature Control is the heavy electric model in the range, built around PID temperature control for back-to-back shots.
- Aleman 1. The first generation, sold as Aleman 1 51mm Group. It takes a 51mm basket and a 16 to 17 g dose instead of 18 to 20 g.
Four stages, all in your hand
-
Pre-soak
1 to 2 bar wets the puck evenly and heads off channeling.
-
Build
Raise pressure gradually so the water finds an even path.
-
Main pull
Hold 6 to 9 bar while the body of the shot comes through.
-
Taper
Ease off at the end for a cleaner, sweeter finish.
A pump machine runs one profile unless you add flow control. On the Aleman, every shot is a profile you choose.
Check two things before you order
Unheated versions need a kettle at every session, and no Aleman in this listing steams milk on its own. If you drink milk drinks, pick a + Z2 Steamer version or plan for a separate steamer. If you already own 58mm tools, avoid the Aleman 1, which is 51mm.
The numbers
Before you pick a version
Heated or unheated, which should I buy?
Heated, if you pull more than one shot in a sitting or want the same temperature every morning. Unheated, if you brew one or two drinks, do not mind heating water in a kettle, or want a machine you can carry.
Can an Aleman steam milk?
Only with the Z2. The espresso machines have no steam wand. The + Z2 Steamer versions add Aleman's stovetop steam station, which heats on your burner and gives dry steam for microfoam.
Is a lever machine hard to learn?
Give it a week. The lever is long, so the force is easy; the skill is a steady pull and a grind that is fine enough. Keep the dose and grind fixed while you learn the pull, then change one thing at a time.
Which grinder works with it?
Any grinder that reaches a fine, even espresso grind. With a lever you feel a grind that is too coarse as a lever that drops with no resistance. A hand grinder such as the 1zPresso K-Ultra suits an unheated, cord-free setup.
