Hand-crank espresso

A manual espresso machine you drive with one handTurn the crank, watch the needle, and decide where every shot goes.

The IKAPE Alkaid is a manual espresso machine built around one idea: you set the pressure, not a pump. A hand crank builds it and a gauge reads it in bar, inside a body of 304 stainless steel, aluminum alloy and walnut wood that weighs 8 kg (17.6 lb) and stands 39 cm (15.4 in) tall. It rewards a coffee drinker with a permanent counter spot who likes learning a shot by feel.

  • Live pressure reading in bar
  • Hand crank in place of a pump
  • 304 stainless steel and aluminum alloy
  • Walnut wood accents

How it works

Pressure from your arm, numbers from the gauge

On a pump machine, the pressure curve is decided for you. Here it follows the way you turn the crank. A slow, light start soaks the coffee at low pressure, then a firmer turn brings the shot up to extraction pressure. The needle tells you where you are, so the feel in your hand finally gets a number attached to it.

This freedom is what you are paying for. Stretch out a gentle pre-infusion for a light roast, settle on the golden 9 bar mark for a classic shot, or run a little higher when a recipe calls for it. Nothing is preset, which means two people can pull very different cups from the same bag of beans.

The maker's spec sheet covers materials, weight and size, and it lists no power rating at all. The pressure is yours to make.

Built to stay planted

Steel, aluminum alloy and walnut make up the frame. With 8 kg (17.6 lb) of weight behind it, the machine has the mass to sit still while you lean into the handle.

Reading the gauge

Three zones the dial is marked for

Soak the bed at 3 to 5 bar

Start every shot here. A light, slow turn soaks the coffee bed before you commit to full pressure, and the gauge confirms you are still in the soft zone.

6 to 9 bar, with 9 as the golden mark

This is the main working range. The maker labels 9 bar as golden extraction, the familiar target for a classic espresso. Settle the needle there and hold it steady through the pour.

9 to 12 bar, also usable

The dial marks this band as applicable too. Think of it as room to experiment when a dense, finely ground dose needs more push, rather than the place to live every morning.

Measure the counter, crank included

The footprint is modest: a base 28 cm (11 in) wide and 17 cm (6.7 in) deep. Overall width reaches 36 cm (14.2 in), though, so give your arm clearance to swing the handle in a full circle. Wall cabinets matter too, since the frame rises 39 cm (15.4 in) off the countertop.

Who this machine suits

Pick it if

  • A live bar reading while your hand sets the pace appeals to you
  • You enjoy dialing in pre-infusion and extraction yourself
  • You have a counter spot where an 8 kg (17.6 lb) machine can live
  • You like walnut set against brushed metal

Questions buyers ask

Straight answers

Does a manual espresso machine like this need electricity?

The shot is driven by the hand crank, not a pump, and the maker's spec sheet lists no power rating. Every bit of pressure you see on the gauge comes from how you turn the handle.

What pressure should I aim for?

Aim for 9 bar, the point the dial labels golden extraction. Open with 3 to 5 bar of pre-infusion, then build into the 6 to 9 bar range. The 9 to 12 bar band is marked usable as well, for doses that need a firmer push.

How much room does it take up?

It stands 39 cm (15.4 in) tall and 36 cm (14.2 in) wide, on a base 28 cm (11 in) wide and 17 cm (6.7 in) deep. The maker notes these are hand measurements that may vary slightly, so allow a small margin.

How is a crank different from a lever press?

A lever travels in an arc, while this IKAPE design turns on a rotating crank. If the lever route sounds better to you, look at the swing-lever S7 from MHW-3BOMBER. Here, a dial marked in pressure zones guides each stage of the turn.
