Gear-driven, no pump

MUVNA Mach M8 hand crank espresso machineTurn the crank, drive the piston, set the pressure yourself.

The MUVNA Mach M8 is a fully mechanical hand crank espresso machine. A geared handle drives a piston through a 120 ml (4 oz) water chamber into a standard 58mm portafilter, and a pressure gauge shows what your hand is doing. SUS304 stainless steel, aluminum alloy, copper and iron sit on a solid walnut base with a built-in drip tray, 11 kg (24 lb) in all. Made for home baristas who want to steer every shot by hand and keep a machine on the counter that looks like an instrument.

  • 3 to 12 bar by hand
  • 58mm portafilter
  • 120 ml chamber
  • Fully mechanical

Machine only, or the full barista set

Machine only

The Mach M8 with its pressure gauge and a bottomless E61-style portafilter, which is how MUVNA packs the machine on its own. Pick this if you already own a 58mm tamper, distribution tool, precision basket and a scale.

Machine with barista set

MUVNA's complete set adds a Lucifer two-ear 58mm portafilter, a Nika 18 g precision basket, a 58mm tamper and distribution tool, an espresso mug, an air blower for cleaning, bar towels, four wrenches, three spare rubber rings and the hard-shell luggage case. Pick this if the Mach is your first espresso setup or if you plan to travel with it.

If the carry case matters to you, choose the barista set, where MUVNA lists the luggage case in the box.

Why a crank

A gear does the heavy lifting

2mm per turnHow far the piston moves for each full turn of the handle
24turnsFrom the top of the chamber to the bottom, one full stroke
12barReached without straining, with the gauge showing every change

On a lever machine your arm holds the pressure, and holding a steady 6 bar while the shot runs takes practice. The Mach trades force for turns. A slow crank gives a gentle pre-infusion, a faster one builds pressure, and stopping the handle holds it. Because the piston only moves 2 mm per turn, small changes in your hand become small changes on the gauge, which is what makes pressure profiling repeatable here.

One shot, start to finish

How a shot goes on the Mach

  1. Hot water in

There is no heater, so the water comes from your kettle. Flush hot water through the group first to warm the metal, then fill the 120 ml chamber.

  2. Dose and lock

Grind about 18 g into the 58mm basket, tamp level and lock the portafilter. MUVNA rates the chamber for up to a 1:5 ratio with an 18 g dose.

  3. Crank low, then higher

MUVNA's own guide: 3 to 5 bar to wet the puck, 6 to 9 bar to balance acidity and sweetness, then 9 to 12 bar for body and oils.

  4. Taper and stop

Slow the handle as the shot turns blond and let the gauge fall. Knock out the puck and wipe the group while it is warm.

Espresso only, kettle required. The Mach M8 has no heating element and no steam wand. Plan on a kettle for every session and a separate frother if you drink lattes or cappuccinos.

Questions buyers ask

Answered plainly

Does the Mach M8 heat its own water?

No. It is fully mechanical, with no heating element and no cord. Boil water in a kettle, flush the group to preheat it, then fill the chamber. Preheat properly, because cold metal pulls heat out of the water.

Is a hand crank harder to learn than a lever?

It is easier on the arm and about the same on the palate. The gear makes 9 to 12 bar light work, so your attention goes to grind size and how fast you turn. Expect a few mornings of dialing in, as with any manual espresso machine.

Will my 58mm portafilters and tools fit?

Yes. The brew head takes standard E61-style 58mm portafilters, so 58mm baskets, tampers and puck screens work. The MUVNA Lucifer 58mm bottomless portafilter is the one MUVNA packs in the set.

How many shots can I pull in a row?

One per fill. The 120 ml chamber holds enough water for a single dose of up to 18 g at a 1:5 ratio, so each shot means refilling with hot water. It suits one or two drinkers, not a crowd.

What grinder does it need?

One that grinds fine and even enough for espresso and adjusts in small steps, because the Mach shows every grind change on the gauge. A hand grinder built for espresso, like the 1zPresso K-Ultra, keeps the whole setup free of cords.
