Espresso and cold brew

SMEG ECF03 espresso machine50s styling over a 58 mm filter holder, a pressure gauge and a Cold Brew function.

The SMEG ECF03 is a manual espresso machine in SMEG's 50s style, with a die-cast aluminum body, a 15 bar pump, Thermoblock heating and a 1.4 L (47 oz) removable water tank. It uses a professional 58 mm filter holder, shows extraction on a pressure gauge, steams milk through a stainless steel wand and brews cold brew in single or double doses. It is for the home barista who wants a design piece on the counter that still pulls a proper shot.

  • 58 mm filter holder
  • Pressure gauge
  • Cold Brew function
  • Three temperature settings
Hot or cold

Two drinks from the same filter holder

Espresso

Single or double shots from the 15 bar pump, with the coffee temperature set to low, optimal or high to suit the roast. Watch the gauge while the shot runs, then steam milk for a cappuccino or flat white.

Cold Brew

A gentle, slow extraction for a cold coffee, in a 100 ml (3.4 oz) single or 160 ml (5.4 oz) double dose. Reviewers timed it at around two minutes: a long pre-infusion, then pulses of cold water through the puck.

The parts that make it pull a real shot

58 mm filter holder

The professional diameter, so standard 58 mm tampers and leveling tools fit. Pressurized and non-pressurized single and double filters come in the box.

Pressure gauge

Real-time feedback on every shot. If the needle stays low and the shot runs fast, grind finer. If it climbs and the coffee drips, grind coarser.

Stainless steel steam wand

For microfoam and milk drinks. Purge it before and after each pitcher and wipe the tip while it is still hot.

Six colors, the same machine inside: Cream, Red, Pastel blue, Pastel green, Black and White.

Check before you buy: there is no grinder inside

The ECF03 brews from ground coffee. Pre-ground works in the pressurized filters. For the non-pressurized filters, and for the gauge to mean anything, you need fresh espresso-fine grounds, so plan on a burr grinder. SMEG's own CGF03 burr grinder is built in the same 50s style.

Questions buyers ask

Answered plainly

Are SMEG espresso machines any good?

The ECF03 is built on real espresso hardware: a 15 bar pump, a 58 mm filter holder, a pressure gauge and three coffee temperatures. Part of what you pay for is the die-cast body and the design, and in return you get a machine that rewards a good grinder and fresh beans.

Is the pump 15 bar or 19 bar?

15 bar. That is SMEG's own rating for the ECF03. The pump number is headroom; the pressure at the coffee depends on your grind and dose, which is what the gauge shows you.

How does the Cold Brew function work?

It runs cold water through the coffee slowly instead of forcing hot water through it. Choose the single or double dose, and the machine handles the pre-infusion and the pulses. Pour it over ice or drink it as it is.

Do standard 58 mm accessories fit?

Yes. The filter holder is 58 mm, the professional standard, so 58 mm tampers, leveling tools and baskets from our barista tools are sized for it.

Does it come with a milk pitcher?

No. SMEG includes the filters, a tamper, a cleaning brush and a steam wand needle, but no pitcher. A small milk frothing pitcher is the size to start with.
