Capsule or ground coffee
Capsule
Drop in a Nespresso-compatible capsule, pour in hot water, pump. Nothing to weigh, grind or tamp, and the shot comes out the same every time. The easy route on a flight, in a hotel room or in an office kitchen.
Ground coffee
Fill the ground coffee basket with espresso-fine coffee and level it. More steps, more freedom: any roaster, any bean, any blend. Freshly ground beans make the bigger difference, which is why two versions come with a manual grinder.
Both routes use the same maker and the same pump.
Four steps, no power needed

Bring hot water
Boil a kettle or fill a thermos before you leave. The maker has no heater, so the water you pour in sets the temperature of the shot.

Load the coffee
Insert a capsule, or fill the ground coffee basket and level the grounds with a light, even press.

Pump
Work the pump with steady strokes. Pressure builds, then espresso runs into the clear cup, so you can watch the crema form.

Rinse and pack
Knock out the capsule or the puck, rinse the parts in warm water, let them dry and slide everything into the storage bag.

Bring hot water with you. There is no heating element and no battery in this maker. Cold water gives a cold, thin shot. If you cannot boil water where you are going, choose a self-heating machine instead.

Does it heat the water?
No. It has no heater and no battery, so pour in water that is already hot, from a kettle or a thermos. Its job is the pressure, up to 15 bar, built by your hand.
Which capsules does it take?
Nespresso-compatible capsules. If you use another capsule system, brew with the ground coffee basket instead; it takes any ground coffee.
Is 15 bar enough for real espresso?
Yes. Espresso is usually defined by about 9 bar of brewing pressure, so a 15 bar rating leaves headroom. The grind and the heat of your water shape the shot more than the last few bar.
Do I need a grinder version?
Only if you want fresh grounds and do not own a grinder. Capsule drinkers and anyone buying ground coffee can take a storage bag version. The grinder versions add a manual grinder to the same maker and bag.
