What 20 bar actually means
A 20 bar pump has headroom. It does not push 20 bar through your coffee, and you would not want it to. The pressure at the puck is set by how fine you grind and how firmly you tamp, and the target is around 9 bar. The extra pump capacity means the machine never runs out of pressure when the grind is on the fine side. So treat the 20 bar as a floor, not a promise, and spend your attention on the grind.
Grinder, pump, wand
The grinder
Beans go in the hopper on top, the grinder doses into the portafilter below. Adjustable settings let you go finer when the shot runs fast and coarser when it chokes. Grinding to order is the single biggest upgrade over pre-ground.
The pump
A 20 bar rated pump behind a standard portafilter. Pull single or double shots. Pressure builds fast, and the grind controls the rest.
The steam wand
Steam a pitcher of milk for lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites. Purge it before and after each use and wipe the tip while it is still hot.
Dial it in three shots
-
Start in the middle
Set the grinder to a middle setting, fill the double basket, tamp level and firm. Pull and time it.
-
Read the shot
Under 20 seconds and watery means grind finer. Over 35 seconds and dripping means grind coarser. Change one thing at a time.
-
Lock it
When a double lands in 25 to 30 seconds and tastes sweet rather than sour or bitter, leave the setting alone. Revisit it only when you change beans.
The numbers
A fair read
This one is for you if
- You are buying your first espresso machine and do not want to buy a grinder too.
- You make one to four drinks a day at home or in a small office.
- You want lattes and cappuccinos, not just black espresso.
Look elsewhere if
- You want a retro design piece for the kitchen. See the EGF03-style machine with grinder.
- You drink pour over, not espresso. The xBloom Studio is the grinder-in-one for that.
Answered plainly
Is a built-in grinder as good as a separate one?
For a home setup, it is the right trade. You lose the ultra-fine adjustment of a standalone burr grinder and gain fresh grinding, no second appliance, and no transferring grounds. If you later want more control, a separate grinder can still feed this portafilter.
Can I use pre-ground coffee?
Yes. Fill the portafilter basket by hand and skip the grinder. Whole beans ground to order taste better, which is the reason the grinder is there.
How do I keep it running well?
Purge the steam wand after every milk drink, knock out and rinse the portafilter after every shot, empty the drip tray daily, and descale on a schedule that matches your water hardness. Wipe the grinder chute weekly so old grounds do not go stale in it.
