Where the fifteen levels take you
SMEG splits the dial into three zones called superfine, fine and medium, with 15 levels spread across them. That is a range built around pressure brewing and paper filters rather than a long coarse steep.
Espresso and Moka pot live at the superfine end. AeroPress lands in the fine zone, while a drip machine or a siphon asks for something closer to medium. Move a single level at a time and write down the number behind the cup you enjoy, so the next bag of beans starts from a known point instead of a guess.
The coarse end stops at medium
French press and cold brew usually call for grounds coarser than medium. This grinder does not reach that far, so a daily press drinker will get a finer cup than that method is designed around. A hand grinder with a wider range suits that routine better.
- Superfine: espresso and Moka pot
- Fine: AeroPress
- Medium: drip machines and siphon
Three reasons it grinds the way it does
Conical steel burrs
Two cone-shaped stainless steel burrs crush the beans between them instead of chopping them with a spinning blade, so the level you set on the dial decides the size of the grounds.
Low-heat grinding
The motor and burrs are designed to hold friction heat back while they turn. Beans that stay cool keep more of their natural oils, and that is where the smell of a freshly opened bag comes from.
A Tritan bean hopper
The container on top is Tritan, a tough BPA-free plastic, and it takes up to 240 g (8.47 oz) of whole beans. Load it once and grind from it over several mornings.
Body and base are plastic, finished in glossy paint with a polished chrome look at the foot.
What SMEG puts on the spec sheet

Keep water away from it
Wipe the painted body with a soft dry cloth and leave wet sponges and abrasive cleaners in the drawer. Brush out the grinding chamber often, because old residue clinging to the burrs ends up in tomorrow's cup and can nudge how a level grinds.

The details

Is this the grinder for your counter
A good match if you
- Brew Moka pot, AeroPress, drip or siphon most days
- Want an electric burr grinder instead of turning a hand crank
- Already own SMEG pieces and want the grinder to sit in the same family
Worth skipping if you
- Make French press or cold brew every day and need a truly coarse grind
- Prefer a single appliance that grinds and pulls shots, such as the SMEG grind-and-brew espresso machine
Short answers before you choose
Can the SMEG coffee grinder grind for espresso?
Yes. The superfine zone is the espresso end of the dial, and SMEG lists a 58 mm (2.28 in) dosing funnel and a portafilter support for this model. That funnel diameter matches the filter holder on the SMEG ECF03 espresso machine.
Is it good for French press?
Not really. The coarsest level is medium, and a press usually wants a coarser grind than that. You will still get coffee, just with more fine particles than the method is built around.
How many coffee beans does the hopper hold?
Up to 240 g (8.47 oz) of whole beans. The container is made from Tritan, a BPA-free plastic.
Does it match the SMEG drip coffee maker?
It shares the glossy paint, rounded 50s lines and chrome-look base of the SMEG small appliance range. Set beside the SMEG DCF02 drip coffee maker, it reads as one matched drip station.
Is the grinder body metal?
No. SMEG builds the body and base from plastic, with a polished chrome finish on the base and glossy paint above it. The burrs inside are stainless steel.
